Anaheim Stadium

Anaheim Stadium 43,000 - 55,000 capacity
2000 E. Gene Autry Way, Anaheim CA
Opened April 9, 1966
Anaheim Stadium (the Big A) is home to Gene Autry's Los Angeles Angels a major league baseball team.

It opened in April 1966 to much fanfare. However, by 1970 the City of Anaheim was in dire straits due to the stadium's mounting debt.  The stadium was $800,000 in the red -  the City was desperate to bring in more revenue. Many referred to it as Autry's big white elephant.

Tom Liegler, director of the stadium, rock concerts at the stadium could be a big source of revenue for the cashed strapped City. The City would keep 10% of the gross paid admission and 30% of that spent at concession stands and all revenue from parking.

All expenses for the concert were picked up by the promoter (often this was Wolf and Rissmiller). Expenses included added security and hiring off duty police officers to handled outside crowd control. It looked like a win win situation.

So .... in the summer of 1970, the City of Anaheim approved a series of concerts to be held at Anaheim Stadium.

The stage was placed at home plate. Attendees were encouraged to bring a blanket and sit on the grass, festival style.

Thus ... Anaheim Stadium became the first major stadium in the country to be used
for rock festivals.

1970

The Who, Leon Russell, Steve Miller and John Sebastian  JUNE 14th (30,000 people attended). Promoters were Concerts Associates.

At first all the stadium director, concert promoters and fans all thought the concert was a smashing success - there were no difficulties or incidents.

However - the conservative Anaheim City Council thought differently after they got wind of there being some drug and alcohol related arrest during the concert. Consequently, the City Council barred any future rock concerts at Anaheim Stadium.

This ban was not lifted until 1975 - except for a a couple of family oriented Osmond Brothers concerts.

Amazing site!! I grew up in Fullerton and saw the following show at Anaheim Stadium:

July 17, 1982 - Foreigner, Loverboy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden

The show was billed as "The Summer Strut." Scorpions blew everyone off the stage.

I was at the who concert the summer of 1970. It was over 100 degrees,no containers allowed. We were pacled in like sardines all on the field. It was a trip!

I have always wanted to know who I saw that summer of 1970! It was over 100 degrees no containers were allowed. We were packed in like sardines so you couldn't get to water. I was a trip! "angel" (mary) I'm almost 60 and I remember it like it was yesterday.

I was at The Who show in 1970 and sat on the infield grass at the shortstop position....An Amazing and memorable afternoon....Also was backstage running a spotlight about 30 feet to the right field side of the stage...I think that was 1976...I still have my "Back Stage Pass"

Thanks for the information...I'll come back in a week or so....nice web site you have..

My friends and I went to 2 of the '78 shows headlined by ELO and separately, Boston. ELO had this huge "spaceship" that "lifted off" with smoke and lights revealing the band for the opening. It was supposed to "land" at the end of the show but it malfunctioned, we didn't find that out until later. For Van Halen, supposedly they parachuted out of planes into the stadium and landed behind stage. They came out in "jumping" gear and opened with "On Fire".

The Anaheim Stadium is a great location and has a lot of things to do surrounding it. It is smack in the middle of downtown Disney so there are always people around. Music Dude

What about the Fourth of July concert of 1976? Santana, Beach Boys. I sat backstage in the bleachers next to Rod Stewart, who didn't play that day. One of the coolest days of my life.

I was at the Aug 20th 1976 concert. Uriah Heap didn't play. It was Montrose with Sammy Hager. They were great and so was Ted Nugent. Bob Seger I remember as being boring. I have photos of that concert on my site at

My brother took these pictures from the stands. All I have is the proof sheets. His camera jammed before Kiss though. There was a guy who walked the tight rope that day. You can see it in one of the photos. Look under Ted Nugent, Montrose and Bob Seger and theres photos of that day.

Was at the Summer Strut in 82 and Iron Maiden and Scorpions were amazing. I specifically remember Scorpions opening with Blackout and by the middle of their set, the second level of the stadium was swaying up and down from everyone rocking out. Saw Bowie there too a few years later. And of course above all....left just before Hank Aaron hit a home run in the 70's (my parents wanted to leave to beat the crowd getting out at the end of the game and we heard the roar from the parking lot....my brother almost killed my mom) and was at the playoff game between the Angels and Red Sox when they tragically lost with one out left and had to go back to Boston and ended up losing the playoffs and didn't go to the World Series. I was crushed as a kid! Great memories of Anaheim Stadium.
