BLACKIES
Blackies was located at 607 n La Brea in Hollywood just north of Clinton Street.
It started up on La Brea Avenue in the summer of 1979. It only lasted about 9 months before the city closed it down. (A second Blackies opened on Main Street in Santa Monica).
Blackies was one of those clubs that started up and closed so fast that most have little recollection of it ever existing. But for a short while it offered a stage for unsigned local punk and new wave type musicians to perform.
The club was long and narrow. Some of the other bands that played there at the time include: the Textones, Berlin, Levi and the Rockats, Wall of Voodoo, and the Plimsouls.
For a short time there were two Blackies.

The the neighbors started to complain. Blackies night club backed up to single family homes. So - it wasn't long before the neighbors complained about the noise and commotion going on. Blackie's days were numbered.

Blackies finally closed for good in April 1980.
More recently, the site was home to the Oasis restaurant. Oasis was a Moroccan/ Spanish themed tapas lounge with a full bar. It was popular about 5 years ago. It was very ornately decorated with its 30 foot brass bar and shimmering lights, blue walls, ruby lanterns and metallic gold both. It is now vacant and for sale.
