Flipper's Roller Boogie Palace opened up in July 1979.

In 1979-1981 - Flipper's was hard to miss. It was the flashy purple-blue building on the northeast corner of La Cienega and Santa Monica Blvds.

The Go-Go's finished second place
in the "Pick of the Players" poll, losing to the Blasters as LA's Best Unsigned Band.

In late December 1980,
Margot fell very ill ( hepatitis). However - there were 3 sold out show at the Whisky coming up. The band urgently looked for a temporary replacement for Margot.

At first, Dianne Chi of the AlleyCats was considered, but finally - a guitarist named Kathy Valentine from Texas is chosen.

Kathy had experience playing guitar for a band called the Textones. As the story goes, - Charlotte asked Kathy one night in the bathroom of the Whisky if she could play bass. Kathy said, Yes! Of course - what a lie that was. However Kathy learned to play bass in three days so she
could play the Go-Go's New Years Eve shows coming up at the Whisky at the end of the year.

Excerpt from L.A. Times article:
Music Connection a widely read local trade publication, announced 1980's winners of L.A.'s top talent:
#1 the Blaster
#2 the GoGo's
#3 X
#4 Plimsouls
#5 Wall of Voodoo

However, by end of 1980, only the Plimsouls had been signed to a contract with a major record label. Local bands apparently are too adventuresome for the big companies.
