L.A. Bands: Rocking or Reeling
by Richard Cromelin
Excerpt from article
The Masque, the Hollywood punk mecca that was closed last year for safety code violations, is struggling to its feet again...(Filling the gap are The Troubadour, Club 88, the Rock Corparation and Madame Wong's.)The groups most often mentions are L.A.'s major new wave bands the Screamers, X, and the Alleycats, with the Plugz, the Flyboys, the Go-Gos, Fear and the Controllers oving up on the inside.

1859 Geary
The Temple - after the big one
The Temple was originally the Albert Pike Memorial Scottish Rite temple.
Located at 1859 Geary, this was were Jim Jones had his People's Temple in the mid 1970's. It was torn down in 1989.
The Clash played their first San Francisco performance, (2nd US show) at the Temple as an underground show advertised purely through graffiti.
The Temple was located next door to the Fillmore It was used as a rehearsal hall in the 60s by the Jefferson Airplane and others. Jim Jones of Guyana/People's Temple infamy takes it over. Various shows were here put on including the Clash.
