ON THE GO - My daughter and I drove down to Orange County to go the Taste of Newport activities. I had never been to a 'taste of' anything activity - so, I was curious indeed. And, I didn't have to cook. Right?
Parking was free and easy -- just park in any of the lots around, and the corporate lots were open too. Now we're talkin'.
Entry was $25 each - but it all goes to charity, right? And there were a lot of tempting food booths.
To begin the experience - you had to get a card and load lots of money on it. As you eat your through - you keep loading money on it. $$$FOR STARTERS - Now these are starters!
- Gelato Paradiso: small cup, mango sorbetto and chocolate-hazelnut gelato, $4.25.
- Back Bay Cafe at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort: beef tenderloin "martini", $6.
- Ho Sum Bistro: Ho Sum chicken and shrimp dumplings with garlic-cilantro sauce, $3. Three dumplings, covered in spicy garlic-cilantro sauce.
- Mama D's Italian Kitchen: Chicken ravioli, $3.50. Probably much better at the restaurant.
- Panini Garden Bistro: Open-faced panini with goat cheese and red peppers, $3.
- Sabatino's Lido Shipyard Sausage Company: sausage and peppers, $6. Really, really, good sausage cooked over lump charcoal with pan-fried onions and peppers.
- Soprano's: slice of New York pizza, $2.25
- Sam and Harry's at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa: Jumbo lump crab cake, $5.50.
- Tapas Restaurant: churros and chocolate, $3.50
- Ten Asian Bistro: lobster hand roll, $7, and Kobe beef slider, $5.
HOW IT GOES - I paid extra $$$ to be in the really close-up seats. Good move- except the sound was so bad from this location. Really bad. But the girls were in good form- considering they just flew in from a show at the Hard Rock in Orlando the night before. To me they looked jet lagged and beat.
Orlando, Florida - (September 15, 2006) - Hard Rock International invited Give Kids The World to party with rock stars at Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando during their 5th birthday bash weekend. Rock icons the Go-Go’s were in town to commemorate the milestone anniversary. The legendary band made a donation of unique stage outfits to Hard Rock; keepers of the largest rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia collection on the planet. A special Velvet Sessions rock 'n' roll party followed, with the Go-Go's performing live for Hard Rock’s packed house.
Give Kids The World Director of Communications, Christian Cascone was joined in The Graceland Suite by all five band members: Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar), Belinda Carlisle (lead vocals), Kathy Valentine (bass), Gina Schock (drums) and Jane Wiedlin (rhythm guitar). The band assisted as Joely Pique from Hard Rock, and Hard Rock Hotel Orlando General Manager, Carlton Hudson presented a check for $5000 to Give Kids The World. www.gktw.org.Here are some great photos of the show curtesy of Jordan Strauss.

HIGH NOTE - Good seats right up close. Small venue, big turn out. I brought my camera this time.
LOW NOTE - Lousy sound system. Lousy crowd. Too many drunk, middle-lifers who had too much of everything - especially wine.

I think I must have put on a few pounds covering that show.
